2005 FFEx Expert Poll
|
| by Richard Harris |
| July 16, 2005 |
| |
| For
the fourth consecutive year, Fantasy Football Experts invited some of the
leading fantasy football analysts in the country to rank the top players at
each position and compete against each other for the title of 2005 FFEx
Expert Poll Champion. In all, 17 experts (15 guests plus two FFEx staff
members) ranked 10 quarterbacks, 15 running backs, 15 wide receivers, 10
tight ends, 10 kickers, and 10 team defenses/special teams from best to
worst for an overall-performance scoring system.
To calculate an
overall ranking, the experts’ selections were weighted. The weight equaled
the total number of players the expert was asked to rank at that respective
position, minus the player’s rank, plus one. For example, if an expert
ranked Peyton Manning as the No. 1 QB, the weight of that selection
would be 10 (10 players ranked at QB, minus 1 for Manning’s ranking, plus
1).
At the end of the
season, FFEx will tally and post the results of the poll. Each expert’s
score will be equal to each ranked player’s fantasy points for the season
multiplied by the weight that was assigned to that player by the expert.
For example, if Manning racks up 400 fantasy points this season, any expert
who ranked Manning No. 1 (weight = 10) will earn 4,000 points from the Colts
QB.
FFEx would like to
thank all the experts who participated. Their selections have been listed
in this order: T.C. Cannon of YouthFantasyFootball.com, Jeff
Christiansen of FFToolbox.com, Brad Curtright of

poll.
QUARTERBACKS
There were not many
surprise picks at the quarterback position, especially at the top, as
Manning, Daunte Culpepper, Donovan McNabb, and Trent Green
finished ranked one through four, respectively. With WR Randy Moss
moving to Oakland, many experts expect big things from Kerry Collins,
and the Raiders quarterback ranked seventh, well ahead of some big-name
players, including Michael Vick and Tom Brady.
The boldest pick
came from Cannon, who ranked former two-time MVP Kurt Warner at No.
9. No doubt, Cannon likes Warner’s chances because he is now in Arizona and
surrounded by a lot of promising young talent, including rookie RB J.J.
Arrington and receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald.

RUNNING BACKS
Considering that 17
experts were asked to list 15 running backs each, it was rather amazing that
the overall list included only 20 names, meaning that there was not a wide
range of opinions. The lack differential wasn’t a result of the experts
being conservative, as the list of 20 included a number of fresh faces, with
Willis McGahee, Kevin Jones, Julius Jones, LaMont
Jordan, Tatum Bell, Steven Jackson, and Brian Westbrook
each receiving at least four votes.
LaDainian
Tomlinson,
the consensus No. 1 overall pick this year, ran away with the top spot with
16 first-place votes, and the experts did not seem to be too concerned about
the issues surrounding Shaun Alexander (unsigned) and Priest
Holmes (age and injuries), who finished second and third, respectively.
The boldest
prediction came from Stephens, who thinks that Bell will follow in the
footsteps of Terrell Davis and many others and produce big numbers in
Denver’s tailback-friendly system. Stephens ranked the Broncos’ second-year
running back at No. 6. Interestingly, Stephens was also only one of two
experts who did not rank former Bronco Clinton Portis.
